Type 4 Coily Hair  (4a)

Type 4 hair is commonly referred to as coily or kinky hair—it's naturally very dry and spongy in texture and can be soft and fine or coarse and wiry.

Type 4a hair is characterized by tightly coiled curls with a defined "S" pattern. The curls are usually smaller in diameter and have a springy texture.

Strands form very tight, small curls of zig-zags right from the scalp and are prone to major shrinkage. This makes detangling quite difficult, so conditioner is essential for keeping strands moisturised and tangle-free. Coily hair is prone to breakage as it struggles to absorb moisture and requires reparative ingredients to strengthen strands like oils and butters.
