How to Control Frizz in Curly Hair: Products & Tips
For years, frizz has been treated as the enemy, something to be defeated with enough product, enough serum, enough anything. The moment the focus shifts from trying to smother it to asking why it is happening, everything changes. That shift is often the most transformative advice passed on to people with curly hair. Not a new product. Not a different curl cream. Just the decision to treat frizz as a signal rather than something to plaster over. This article explains what may be causing your frizz, which techniques make the biggest difference, and which products are genuinely worth the money, versus the ones that only create the appearance of smooth, defined curls while quietly making the underlying issue worse. Why Frizz Is a Symptom, Not the Problem The most common mistake people make when trying to control frizz in curly hair is treating it as a problem rather than a signal. Frizz is the hair communicating: dehydration, damage, product buildup or environmental stress. Piling on oils, serums and heavy creams to smooth it down may create a sleeker result for a day or two. But if the underlying cause remains unaddressed, those layers of product compound over time, leaving curls weighed down and even more prone to frizzing. Another common habit is reaching for straighteners when frizz becomes frustrating. Repeated high heat gradually chips away at the cuticle, making the hair increasingly porous. The more porous the hair becomes, the more it absorbs moisture from humid air and loses it in dry conditions causing more frizz, more heat styling and more damage. It is a cycle that gradually worsens the very thing being addressed. Before reaching for anything, identify the trigger. Dehydration, buildup, heat damage, humidity, hard water minerals and protein overload all produce frizz — but for completely different reasons. What Actually Causes Frizz in Curly Hair? Understanding frizz starts with the hair cuticle. Your hair cuticle is the outermost layer of each strand, made up of overlapping scales. When those scales lie flat, the hair reflects light, repels excess moisture and stays defined. When they are raised or damaged, moisture moves in and out unpredictably, causing the strand to swell unevenly. That swelling is frizz. The five main culprits are: Dehydration — the cuticle opens in search of moisture, causing strands to puff up Product or mineral buildup — a coating on the hair blocks moisture from penetrating and disrupts curl formation Heat damage — permanently lifts or chips the cuticle, increasing porosity Humidity — raised cuticles absorb environmental moisture unevenly Protein overload — too much protein stiffens the hair, making it brittle and frizzy The biggest misconception is that frizz automatically means dry hair. In reality, frizz can also be caused by product buildup, hard water, humidity or damage. Adding more moisture when the underlying cause is something else is unlikely to solve the problem. Curly hair is also structurally more prone to frizz than straight hair. The curved shape of each strand makes it harder for natural oils to travel from root to tip, so curls tend towards dryness and cuticle disruption by default. The One Change That Can Transform Curls One of the biggest transformations can come from something as simple as adding a clarifying shampoo. Sometimes the answer is not a new mask or a different gel, but a cleanser that actually removes what has been building up on the hair. If product residue, hard water minerals or excess oils are coating the strands, even the best conditioner cannot penetrate properly. The moisture sits on top of the buildup and washes away. Once that layer is cleared, curls often become softer, more defined and noticeably easier to manage and all without changing anything else in the routine. How often clarifying is needed depends on product use, water hardness and curl density. For most people, every two to four weeks works well. The common instinct when curls feel dull and heavy is to reach for another conditioning mask, but in many cases that only adds to the buildup. Clarifying first is almost always the more effective move. The Application Technique That Costs Nothing One of the most effective techniques for controlling frizz in curly hair on a limited budget is applying all styling products to soaking wet hair. Not damp. Not towel-dried. Dripping wet. When hair is fully saturated, it is already in its most expanded state. Applying product at this point means it distributes evenly and helps curls clump together from the very start of the drying process. As the hair dries, the product seals in moisture rather than sitting on the surface. Here is how to do it practically: Step out of the shower and lean over the bath or sink — do not towel-dry Apply leave-in conditioner and styling product section by section while the hair is still dripping Scrunch upward to encourage curl clumps to form Diffuse on low heat or air dry completely without touching the hair The difference in definition and frizz reduction is often immediate, and it requires no new products whatsoever. How to Tailor Your Routine to Your Hair Type and Climate Frizz routines should not begin with curl pattern alone. The starting point should be what the hair is currently experiencing. Fine curls need lightweight hydration. Heavy creams and butters will weigh them down and flatten the curl, which often makes frizz worse by disrupting the clump. Thicker or coarser curls can handle (and often need) richer formulas to adequately smooth the cuticle. Dense hair requires products to be applied in sections rather than all at once. Otherwise, the inner layers receive no coverage and frizz from the inside out. Climate matters just as much as hair type. In the UK, there are essentially two different environments to manage throughout the year: Humid UK summers: Focus on anti-humidity gels or serums that seal the cuticle against external moisture. Look for film-forming ingredients or humidity blockers. Cold, dry UK winters: Shift the priority to moisture retention. Central heating dramatically dries indoor air, and that moisture loss will show up as frizz without active compensation. Separately, hard water is its own frizz trigger and requires its own solution. No amount of conditioner corrects mineral buildup. Address it with a chelating shampoo first, then layer hydration and styling products on top. Products That Actually Work vs. Products That Just Look Like They Do Many frizz-control products rely on silicones or heavy oils to coat the hair and create the appearance of smooth strands for a day or two. That is not the same as addressing the frizz. The products that consistently deliver better long-term results are the ones matched to the cause: Dry or dehydrated hair: A hydrating leave-in conditioner — Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-In or Kinky-Curly Knot Today replenish moisture rather than masking dryness Damaged hair: Bond-building treatments like K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask or Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector improve structural integrity, which naturally reduces frizz over time Product or mineral buildup: A clarifying shampoo like Bounce Curl Clarifying Shampoo, or a chelating formula for hard water areas, will often do more for curl definition than any serum Humidity: Anti-humidity products like Color Wow Dream Coat create a barrier that prevents environmental moisture from lifting the cuticle When investing in just one product, choose a good leave-in conditioner. It locks in moisture, smooths the cuticle and reduces friction, making it the foundation for everything else in your routine. The Frizz Myths That Need Busting Myth 1: Frizz always means the hair needs more moisture. This is one of the most damaging myths in the curly hair space. While dehydration can cause frizz, it's far from the only reason. Product buildup, hard water and damage can all play a part. Adding more conditioning treatments when the real issue is buildup may actually make the problem worse by preventing moisture from reaching the hair. Myth 2: All silicones are bad for curly hair. Modern silicones can be genuinely useful. When used correctly, they protect against humidity and reduce friction, both direct causes of frizz. The issue was never silicones themselves; it was using them without cleansing regularly enough to prevent buildup. Myth 3: Smooth equals healthy. Daily heat gradually chips away at the cuticle, increasing porosity and creating a cycle of worsening frizz that becomes harder and harder to break without addressing the underlying damage first. A Simple Frizz-Control Routine You Can Start Today On wash day: Clarify every two to four weeks, or more frequently in hard water areas or with heavy product use Condition thoroughly and use the squish-to-condish method by squeezing conditioner into the hair with a scrunching motion to encourage curl clumping before rinsing Do not towel-dry. Apply leave-in conditioner and styling product immediately to soaking wet hair, working in sections Diffuse on low heat or air dry without touching the hair until fully dry Between wash days: Refresh with a small amount of water and leave-in conditioner rather than restyling from scratch Avoid touching dry hair as breaking curl clumps is one of the fastest routes to frizz Ongoing: Reassess every few weeks whether the routine is targeting the actual cause of the frizz or simply layering product on top of it Adjust your routine for the season e.g. prioritise humidity protection in summer and moisture retention in winter Apply products in sections if the hair is dense to ensure even coverage throughout The Takeaway Frizz is a symptom with a specific cause, and the right product or technique depends entirely on identifying what that cause actually is. No smoothing serum will fix dehydration at the root level, and no conditioning mask will undo mineral buildup from hard water. Two quick and easy places to start are 1) clarifying to reset the hair and 2) applying products to soaking wet strands. Together, these changes address some of the most common frizz triggers and unlock the effectiveness of everything else in the routine. FAQs Can I still use a hair serum for frizz? Yes. A serum can help smooth the hair and protect against humidity, but it works best as the final step in your routine. If frizz is caused by dehydration, buildup or damage, a serum will only mask the symptoms rather than solve the underlying problem. Should I use oil before or after styling? For most curly hair routines, oils work best after styling or once the hair is dry to help reduce frizz and add shine. Applying oil before your leave-in products can make it harder for water-based moisturisers to penetrate the hair. Can I use a leave-in conditioner and a serum together? Absolutely. They do different jobs. A leave-in conditioner hydrates and conditions the hair, while a serum helps seal the cuticle, add shine and protect against humidity. Using them together often delivers better results than using either one alone. I've clarified my hair, so why is it still frizzy? Clarifying removes product buildup and mineral deposits, but it isn't a cure for every type of frizz. If your hair is still frizzy after clarifying, the cause is likely something else. Dehydration, heat damage, humidity, protein overload or an application technique that isn't locking in enough moisture can all contribute. Start by assessing how your hair feels. If it feels rough or dry, focus on hydration. If it feels brittle or breaks easily, damage or protein overload may be the issue. If frizz only appears in humid weather, an anti-humidity styling product may make the biggest difference. Does it matter if my hair is frizzy? Not always. Frizz is a natural part of textured hair and doesn't automatically mean your hair is unhealthy. A little frizz is normal, particularly in humid weather or after several days between washes. If frizz is excessive, persistent or accompanied by dryness, breakage or dullness, it may be worth looking at the underlying cause rather than simply trying to smooth it away.

The Glass Hair Secret: How to Get Mirror Shine Without Damaging Your Hair
Glass hair is achieved by creating a perfectly smooth hair cuticle that reflects light like a mirror, requiring precise temperature control, proper moisture preparation, and professional techniques that most people get wrong. I used to think smoke coming off the flat iron meant the product was working. It actually meant I was boiling the hair. That sizzle is moisture trapped inside the hair shaft reaching boiling point and bursting through the cuticle, creating micro-fissures that permanently damage your hair's ability to shine. After months of perfecting this technique, I've discovered that glass hair isn't about using the hottest iron or expensive products. It's about understanding light reflection and working with your hair's natural structure. What Is Glass Hair? The Science Behind the Mirror Effect Glass hair is the visual effect achieved when hair cuticles lie completely flat and parallel, creating an uninterrupted surface that reflects light uniformly. Think of the difference between frosted glass and a clear mirror—the smoother the surface, the better the reflection. When hair cuticles are raised or damaged, light scatters in multiple directions, creating dullness. But when cuticles are sealed flat through proper heat application, light bounces off in a single direction, creating that coveted mirror-like shine. Some hair naturally reflects light better due to genetic factors like cuticle thickness and natural oil production. Asian hair often has a rounder cross-section and naturally flat cuticles that reflect light more efficiently. However, any hair type can achieve glass hair with the right approach. The Biggest Mistakes That Prevent Glass Hair Success The biggest trap I see people fall into is cranking their flat iron to maximum temperature and sliding it down ten times. This approach destroys your hair's reflective potential. High heat boils residual moisture inside the hair shaft, causing it to burst through the cuticle and create micro-bubbles. This permanently roughs up the hair surface, ensuring it will never properly reflect light again. Product buildup is equally destructive. Layers of styling products, especially heavy oils and serums, create an uneven surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it cleanly. Your hair might feel soft, but it won't have that mirror finish. The multiple-pass myth is particularly damaging. Each additional pass with the iron increases your chances of overheating and damaging the cuticle. My technique focuses on getting it right in one controlled pass. Why Some Hair Types Struggle More With Glass Hair High-porosity hair has cuticles that don't lay flat naturally, making it harder to achieve that smooth, reflective surface. These hair types require more intensive moisture preparation and lower heat settings to avoid further cuticle damage. Type 4 coily and kinky hair presents unique challenges because the natural curl pattern means the hair surface is constantly changing direction, making uniform light reflection more difficult. However, this doesn't mean glass hair is impossible—it just requires adapting the technique. For coarse or textured hair, I focus on thorough detangling, intensive moisture treatments, and patience with the process. The goal isn't to change your hair's fundamental structure, but to temporarily smooth the cuticle layer for maximum light reflection. The Professional Comb-Chase Technique (Step-by-Step) The comb-chase technique is one of the best ways to achieve smooth, reflective glass hair with fewer passes of the flat iron. By guiding a fine-tooth carbon comb directly in front of the plates, each strand is detangled, aligned and smoothed before heat is applied. Set your flat iron to the right temperature for your hair type and condition. Fine, damaged or colour-treated hair should stay around 160°C–180°C, medium hair can usually tolerate 180°C–190°C, while thick, coarse or textured hair may need 190°C–200°C. The goal is to use the lowest effective heat that smooths the hair in one slow, controlled pass. The Technique: Section hair into 1-inch horizontal sections Hold a fine-tooth carbon comb directly in front of your flat iron plates Run the comb down the hair section first, ensuring every fiber is perfectly parallel Follow immediately behind with the flat iron in one slow, controlled motion The entire process should take 8-10 seconds per section The carbon comb is crucial because it conducts heat without melting, and the fine teeth catch every hair fiber. This precision ensures that each strand lies perfectly flat before the iron seals it. Never go back over a section once it's cooled. If you missed a piece, wait for the hair to completely cool, then repeat the entire comb-chase process on that section. Essential Products for Glass Hair Foundation Glass hair is impossible on a damaged or dirty foundation. My product selection focuses on repair and weightless hydration that doesn't interfere with heat styling. Start with a clarifying shampoo to remove all buildup, followed by a protein treatment if your hair shows signs of damage. The goal is to create the cleanest possible canvas for styling. Thermal protection is non-negotiable. I look for products containing specialised thermal-defense polymers that form a protective barrier without weighing hair down. Avoid heavy oils or serums that will interfere with the flat iron's ability to seal the cuticle. Weightless hydration products are essential, especially for porous hair types. These should provide moisture without leaving residue. Apply these products to damp hair, then ensure hair is 100% dry before any heat styling. The foundation phase often determines 80% of your final result. Rushing through preparation will sabotage even perfect technique. Can You Put Glass Hair on Dry Hair? The Moisture Rule Hair must be 100% dry before attempting glass hair—this rule has no exceptions. Any residual moisture will create steam when it contacts the hot iron. That steam has nowhere to go except through the hair cuticle, creating microscopic holes and permanent texture changes. Preparation sequence: Wash and condition hair thoroughly Apply thermal protection to damp hair Blow-dry completely using a paddle brush Let hair cool to room temperature (5-10 minutes) Check for any damp sections, especially at the nape Only then begin the glass hair process Even if you're working on day-old hair, I check for any moisture from humidity or overnight treatments. When in doubt, do a quick blow-dry to ensure complete dryness. Adapting Glass Hair for Different Seasons and Occasions Summer humidity requires extra protection and setting techniques. I recommend using anti-humidity sealants after styling and avoiding glass hair on days with over 70% humidity unless you're staying indoors. Winter brings static electricity challenges. Lower iron temperatures work better in dry conditions, and incorporating lightweight oils after styling (not before) helps prevent flyaways without compromising the mirror finish. Professional vs. everyday adaptation: For special events, you can push for maximum drama with slightly higher temperatures and longer-lasting products. For daily wear, I focus on gentler techniques that maintain hair health while still achieving noticeable shine. Maintaining Glass Hair: The Insider Tips Most Tutorials Skip Daily maintenance determines how long your glass hair lasts, and most people destroy the effect within hours without realising it. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase and tie hair loosely at the very top of your head—never at the nape. The goal is to prevent friction and maintain the parallel alignment of hair strands while you sleep. Refresh vs. restyle decision: If 70% of the shine remains, you can refresh with a cool blow-dryer and smoothing serum. If the effect is mostly gone, attempting to refresh often makes it worse—start over with the full process. Avoid touching your hair throughout the day. Natural oils from your hands disrupt the smooth surface and attract environmental particles that dull the shine. Think of glass hair as a temporary architectural change to your hair structure. The more you understand and respect that structure, the longer your results will last.

Everything You Need to Know About Deep Conditioning Your Hair
If you’ve ever wondered why some hair treatments feel more intense than your regular conditioner, the answer is a deep conditioner. At Kiyo Beauty, we recommend deep conditioning as a key part of any hair care routine—especially for dry, damaged, or over-processed hair. In this guide, you’ll discover what deep conditioning is, who benefits most, and how hydrating hair masks can transform your strands. What Is Deep Conditioning? Deep conditioning is all about intense hydration and nourishment. Unlike regular conditioners, which rinse off in a few minutes, deep conditioning treatments are left on your hair for 20–30 minutes (or longer for very dry hair). This allows the formula to penetrate deep into the hair shaft, delivering moisture, protein, and nutrients where your hair needs it most. While regular conditioners refresh your hair superficially, deep conditioners repair, restore, and strengthen hair from within, making them essential for healthy, resilient strands. Ecoslay Matcha Boost Protein Treatment for All Curl Types Why Deep Conditioning Is Essential Deep conditioning addresses these issues by: Restoring moisture: Hydrates dry, brittle hair, leaving it soft and manageable. Improving texture: Smooths and softens hair, making styling easier. Strengthening hair: Replenishes lost protein and repairs damage from heat styling, colouring, or environmental stressors. Enhancing shine: Restores natural luster to dull, lifeless hair. Preventing future damage: Protects hair from breakage and dryness. No matter your hair type—straight, wavy, curly, or coily—deep conditioning is a must for maintaining healthy hair. Who Should Use Deep Conditioning Hair Treatments Anyone can benefit from hydrating hair masks, but certain hair types and lifestyles see the most improvement: Dry, damaged, or over-processed hair: Perfect for hair that’s been coloured, heat-styled, or chemically treated. Curly and coily hair: Naturally drier hair types are prone to breakage; deep conditioning keeps curls defined, soft, and hydrated. Heat styling enthusiasts: Frequent use of irons and blow dryers weakens strands; deep conditioning restores strength. Swimmers: Chlorine and saltwater dry hair; deep conditioning replenishes moisture. Colour-treated hair: Protects colour and keeps hair vibrant. Signs Your Hair Needs a Deep Conditioning Treatment Look for these signs to know when your hair is craving a hydrating hair mask: Frizz: Hair is dry and hard to manage. Tangles: Hair knots easily and feels rough. Dullness: Hair lacks shine and vitality. Breakage: Split ends or weakened strands. Colour-treated hair: Faded or stressed hair needs extra care. Our Advice At Kiyo Beauty, deep conditioning is about listening to your hair. Instead of following a strict schedule, watch for signs like dryness, brittleness, frizz, or dullness. These are your hair’s way of asking for nourishment. For curly and coily hair, deep conditioning is essential. Think of it as preventative maintenance: even healthy-looking hair benefits from a regular deep conditioning session, keeping it strong, hydrated, and resilient. Top Tips for Effectively Deep Conditioning Your Hair Use the right product: Choose deep conditioners rich in proteins, oils, and hydrating ingredients suited to your hair type. Leave it on long enough: Give your hair 20–30 minutes (or longer for very dry hair) to fully absorb nutrients. Rinse thoroughly: Remove excess product to keep hair nourished but lightweight. FAQ I have fine hair, do I need a deep conditioner? Absolutely! Fine hair can still get thirsty, but the trick is to go lightweight. Use a gentle deep conditioner or hydrating hair mask, and focus on the mid-lengths and ends instead of the roots. Leave it on for 10–15 minutes, and you’ll get soft, manageable hair without it feeling heavy or flat. How do I choose the right deep conditioner for my curl type? Loose curls (2A–2C): Go for something light that moisturises without weighing your hair down like the Innersene Hydrating Hair Mask Medium curls (3A–3C): A mix of oils and proteins works well to keep your curls defined and frizz-free. Tight curls & coils (4A–4C): Rich, nourishing formulas with butters and oils are your best friends—they help restore moisture, strengthen strands, and bring out your curl’s bounce. Think about your hair’s condition, not just your curl type. Even looser curls can need a richer mask if they’re dry or colour-treated.

Fixing the Morning Curl Madness: How to Save your Natural Hair Routine
Have you ever woken up scared because you just know that underneath the bonnet is a hair helmet, and you only have an hour to leave the house, maybe less? And your natural hair is definitely not frizz-free. But a rushed morning routine isn’t the solution for maintaining curl definition, nor is risking being late for work. The truth is, many common morning habits are secretly sabotaging your hair health, natural hairstyles and curl definition without you even realising it. The short answer - if there was one - would be 'you're probably doing too much’ Morning Rush Solutions You’re in a rush, so you’re likely a little stressed, and when we’re stressed, we don’t always treat our hair with the best of care. So here’s what we suggest for your morning hair routine: Put some calming music on like classical music and take five minutes to assess the situation. Sometimes it’s just about shaking your hair free from the hair helmet. Other times, you might have to utilise a cute scarf for a curly hairstyle. But mostly, it’s about getting your spray bottle out and spot treating the few frizzies you have. What also helps for me is to get out some hair bobbles to reduce shrinkage, and in minutes, my hair goes from bed hair to ready-to-leave-the-house hair. No Crunch No Long Lasting Curls Having a great morning routine relies almost entirely on a good wash day. I am currently on day 5 hair, and I have barely used any curly hair products since including water. My secret? Ensuring I achieve that satisfying ‘crunch’ on wash day, which naturally softens days pass while maintaining curl definition. I don’t use gels weekly because I alternate with creams, as gels can sometimes dry out my hair. This means I don’t always reach seven plus days between washes and occasionally need to refresh my hair with the best hair products for curly hair(check out my recommendations in the next section). Tip: When using gel, make sure to style your hair when it’s wet not damp and use strong or medium hold gels to get the cast you desire. Layer your gels (two gels maximum) and always prime your hair with a leave in conditioner. And if you prefer creams, again, style your hair whilst wet and take time to finger coil sections for ultimate frizz control. Again, I can’t stress this enough - never go to bed with wet. Product Recommendations For Morning Ready Hair I want to recommend I Create Hold from Innersense because it is a product that has never let my natural hair down, but to risk being boring and repetitive, let's recommend some other amazing curl products that will revolutionise your morning routine. The Bali Curls Curl Defining Gel I first discovered the gel whilst I was in Germany as I needed something small that I would finish there. I loved it and didn't struggle with it at all. My brother, however, got flakes because he didn't use a leave-in conditioner first – so remember, if you pair this with a good leave-in, you'll get beautiful, defined curls. The Bali Curls Strong Hold Flaxseed Gel This is another great, strong hold gel option and will have your hair defined, hydrated and healthy. It’s worth noting that both Bali Curls gels come in 150ml sizes, so I can imagine they will last between one to two months for one person. At about £12.99 each, that's half the price of ICH (I Create Hold), but ICH typically lasts me between 4-6 months, so I get more use out of it in the long run. That being said, you don't actually need much gel with these products – what you need is a lot of water, so you might get longer than two months of use. I suggest trying one of these gels to see how long it lasts for you and if you like the results. A good gel is worth investing in (a gel that works for your specific hair type, as I've tried many that didn't work for me). And for the cream lovers out there, try the Skala Mais Cachos Hair Treatment Cream or if you're only into Bali Curls, go for the hydrating curl cream. Where to Find the Best Hair Products for Your Morning Routine Looking for great products that make your wash day results last? You can buy our curly hair products online or visit our curly hair shop in Romford. We're your one-stop beauty supply shop in Essex and online. Whether you need a gel, a cream or some beauty products, we've got you covered with options for every hair type and concern.
The Kiyo Beauty 2025 Black Friday Guide
Black Friday beauty deals are only a week away, and like most of us, you might be wondering where to shop. Shopping can be overwhelming, specifically when it comes to Christmas rush when every brand around is shouting about their sales. And understandably, you are going to want to save more than you spend, sticking to your budget. But how do you get great deals whilst shopping consciously? And is it worth saving your spending for Black Friday? Before we dive in, a quick note: Our Black Friday deals are NOW LIVE with up to 40 percent off sitewide at Kiyo Beauty! Discounts are automatically applied at checkout, so you can start shopping your wishlist right away. Now, let's talk about how to shop smartly during sales like these. Set the budget Setting a budget is essential to shopping sustainably on Black Friday, as shopping without a budget is like taking an exam without studying. You don’t want to shop blind; otherwise, you risk shopping in excess. For example, let’s say your budget is £50, prior to black Friday, make a list of your top 5 products and accessories you want to buy. This might look like: Gel Mousse Shampoo Conditioner Cream and Leave-in Satin and Silk hair accessories Assess if there’s anything on your list you can avoid getting, and look at what you have at home before clicking add to basket. It is tempting to buy all the top curly hair products, but the truth is you likely don’t need most of them. For example, I recently bought hair gels, a shampoo, a hair cream leave-in, and I still have plenty of conditioner and hair masks left. So realistically, do I need more of those right now? Probably not. This is where justification comes in - and I don't mean justifying impulse purchases! I mean genuinely asking yourself: ‘Will I use this in the next few months? Do I actually need this, or do I just want it because it's on sale?’ Here’s my list: Miche Gel To Foam Miche Strawberry Champagne Gel That’s it - two items. And why? Because I have used the gel to foam before and I am looking for another product to use in between my travels, as I take the train quite often to visit family so I am looking for a two-in-one product. And the gel? To be truthful, this one is more of a treat as I have heard that you don’t need much, and I have watched thousands of videos across the years that established the Miche gel as one of the best curly hair products around (so if that’s the case just wait for a review.) Plus, I am getting a thirty percent discount, so it puts everything into perspective. Do your Research How long should you be researching Black Friday beauty deals? I wouldn’t quantify it, but we advise spending a little time reading product descriptions, watching reviews, and reading the blogs on here so you know that you're getting quality items that work for your hair type, not just things that are heavily discounted. And this will differ for every head of hair. Who to Shop For (And What to Get Them) The best Black Friday beauty deals aren't just about stocking up for yourself - they give you the opportunity to save on Christmas shopping. And if you are looking to maximise your savings, why not get ahead of birthday shopping too? Yes, even if their birthday isn't until September. So, who could you be shopping for? Your Curl Best Friend: Think starter kits, cult-favourite gels, or those luxury products that they just can’t justify splurging on. Anyone Starting Their Curl Journey: Starting a curl journey often leads to a lot of trial and error - figuring out what actually works for your hair. From shampoos, to conditioners, to styling products, Black Friday is the perfect time to help someone experiment with a range of products without breaking the bank. The Skincare Lover: Many brands offer incredible deals on skincare sets and bundles during Black Friday. We stock a wide range of skincare products, including K-Beauty favourites, so there’s something for every skin type and concern. When You're Not Sure: Gift sets are lifesavers when you don’t exactly know who you’re buying for, as there’s usually plenty of options … even for the pickiest of people. They allow the recipient to try multiple products without committing to full sizes. How to Shop Even More Mindfully Shopping mindfully isn’t just researching products in advance; it’s ensuring you get the best offers at the best time. Here’s what you can do to ensure you get the most out of our Black Friday sales: Sign Up for Early Access: Most brands offer early access to their Black Friday sales if you're on their email list or download their app. Get the Best Deals on Time: Don't wait until the last minute. The best products often go quickly, so shop early in the sale period so your products aren’t out of stock. Consider Buy Now, Pay Later: If you're budgeting carefully but want to spread the cost, options like Klarna or Clearpay can help, and it is a service we offer, but only if you're confident you can make the payments. Shop Mindfully: Just because something is on sale doesn't mean you need it. Stick to your list, remember your budget, and ask yourself if each purchase genuinely adds to your curly hair routine. Top Black Friday Recommendations Here are some brands worth checking out this Black Friday: UK-Based Brands: Kurl Kitchen - Natural ingredients and UK-made products Trepadora - Sustainable, vegan hair care American Brands (Available in the UK): Keep in mind that some popular American brands like The Doux may have stock sitting in customs, so delivery times might be longer. However, they're incredibly popular for good reason: The Doux Curlsmith Camille Rose Bounce Curl Uncle Funky's Daughter Treluxx Kitsch Final Thoughts Black Friday allows you to stock up on all of your favourite products, try new brands, and get your Christmas shopping done early, all while saving money. The key is to shop intentionally, stick to your budget, and focus on products you'll actually use. At Kiyo Beauty, we're offering thirty percent off this Black Friday, making it the perfect time to invest in quality products for your curl journey. Whether you're shopping for yourself or a curl friend, we've got you covered. Happy shopping, and remember: the best deal is on something you actually need.
The K-Beauty Essentials You Actually Need
Korean beauty products have revolutionised the skincare world with their gentle and innovative products. You might be asking, ‘Is K-Beauty worth it?’ or you might already be sold and have a collection in your bathroom. Either way, at Kiyo Beauty, we are here to answer your every question and are proud to bring to you a curated collection of K-Beauty essentials. And if you’re searching for ‘Korean skincare near me’ just know that you’re at the right place. Why K-Beauty Stands Apart What makes a Korean skincare routine so special? Korean beauty practices aren't about whether you're into makeup or skincare, nor are they tied to status, gender, or wealth. Skincare is an essential cultural heritage, passed down from generation to generation as a fundamental aspect of self-care and well-being. South Koreans are known to spend more on skincare than anywhere else in the world, not as a luxury, but as an investment in oneself. But K-beauty is not just trendy; it is effective, with natural ingredients that nurture the skin and prevent damage, resulting in radiant, healthy skin that K-beauty is renowned for. The K-Beauty Essentials You Actually Need Double Cleansing Agents Double cleansing is an essential step of Korean skincare. Firstly, use an oil-based cleanser to cleanse without damaging the skin. We recommend the Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil. It is suitable for all skin types (as most if not all oil-based cleansers are). This lightweight cleanser soothes the skin as it dissolves any makeup and sunscreen without stripping the skin, leaving it prepped for the second cleanse. For your second cleanse, we recommend a water-based cleanser like the Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Deep Cleansing Foam. This deep pore cleanser will gently exfoliate your skin, leaving it refreshed and hydrated. It is great for all skin types, but specifically those with oily and combination skin. Exfoliants for Brighter, Smoother Skin Exfoliation is an important step to any Korean skincare routine, removing dead skin cells which will reveal a smoother texture and lead to better product absorption. At Kiyo Beauty, we have a wide range of K-beauty exfoliants, such as: Anua Rice Enzyme Brightening Cleansing Powder – this powder-to-foam exfoliant will gently remove any impurities from your skin without stripping away its natural oils. The key ingredient of rice extract moisturises and brightens skin, leaving it soft, smooth and nourished. Medicube Zero Pore Pad – These double-sided pro-soaked pads work to gently exfoliate the skin. Plus, they reduce your pores, leaving the skin clear and smooth. Toners: The Misunderstood Essential of K-Beauty Korean toners are nothing like the astringent, alcohol-heavy Western versions you might remember. In K-beauty, toners serve multiple crucial functions depending on their formulation, such as: pH Balancing Hydration Exfoliation When looking for the right toner for you, look for toners based on your skin type and skin goals. This k-beauty product Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner is perfect for use after cleansing. It refreshes the skin and calms inflammation, as well as providing gentle hydration. Serums: Concentrated Solutions for Targeted Concerns K-beauty serums are concentrated skincare products that target specific skin concerns, such as brightening skin and feature ingredients like snail mucin, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, green tea, and ginseng. Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum - this lightweight serum is suitable for those who struggle with hyperpigmentation, even out your skin tone. Jumiso Waterfull Hyaluronic Acid Serum - this serum delivers multi-layer hydration and simultaneously strengthens the skin barrier. Moisture and Protection Korean moisturisers focus on deeply hydrating and repairing the skin with their lightweight formulations: Anua Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream - This trending cream has a rich texture, soothing irritated skin whilst providing moisture, helping you achieve that famous ‘glass skin’ glow. ``` Medicube Deep Vita C Capsule Cream - and if you're looking to tackle uneven skin tone, look no further. This innovative formula works by deeply hydrating and visibly brightening the skin, helping to create a more radiant and even complexion. And no K-beauty routine is complete without sun protection: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+ -this fast-absorbing sun cream provides UV protection with SPF50+ without a white cast. Formulated with rice extract and vitamin B5 for skin barrier repair and added hydration. Solutions for Specific Concerns For acne-prone skin try COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch - these thin, clear hydrocolloid patches gently extract impurities while protecting blemishes from bacteria. These blemish patches are virtually invisible under make up and come in three sizes to address all types of blemishes. And for Anti-Aging: Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask - this overnight treatment restores elasticity to the skin whilst locking in moisture, leaving the skin clear and glowy. Build Your K-Beauty Routine The famous 10-step Korean routine isn't mandatory. Begin with the essentials, a cleanser, a toner, serum, moisturiser, and SPF. You’ll have glass skin in no-time. And don't forget to incorporate sheet masks once or twice a week - these Korean beauty products deliver concentrated ingredients for an instant boost of hydration and nourishment. At Kiyo Beauty, we bring you all your Korean Beauty favourites at accessible prices. Explore our full range and discover why Korean beauty has transformed skincare worldwide.
Why Your Curls Hate Every Product You Try: The Curl Care Tips You Need To Know
Imagine this: You have finally found curly hair products that work for you - products that you have researched extensively for months. Then suddenly, they stop working. Your hair is excessively crunchy, greasy or just wonky. Before you toss your products, pause to identify why your products don’t seem to work. It’s not that your hair is being difficult; your hair is telling you something about the product, your technique, or what it needs right now. You're Not Using the Product as Intended This sounds obvious, but most of us skip reading the instructions. I did it just the other day. I was in a Facebook group discussing hair gels, and I shared that I couldn’t justify buying this particular gel as it was 8 oz and I would go through it within a month. A commenter replied that you only need the smallest amount. After more research, I realised she was right. Following instructions matters more than you think, as they tell you: How wet your hair should be - 'damp' or 'soaking wet' makes a huge difference with stylers for curl definition. The amount - that 'quarter-sized' recommendation exists for a reason Application - does it need to be emulsified in your palms first? Layering order - does it work best over a leave-in conditioner or on product-free hair? Product Buildup Sabotages Your Curl Results Dirty won’t perform its best, as the products just sit on top of your head rather than being absorbed into your strands. Build-up can clog your pores and make your hair appear greasy rather than shiny, feel sticky rather than soft, and wonky rather than curly. Before blaming the product for not working, make sure you've applied it to clean hair if you are looking to achieve frizz-free results. It doesn't need to be day 1 hair, but past day 7, you're risking significant buildup that will block any product from working properly and ruin your curl definition. You're Not Clarifying Often Enough Even if you’re double cleansing, your regular shampoo might not be enough to remove everything. Silicones, oils, creams, gels, hard water minerals and product residue can accumulate over time - and your everyday shampoo isn't designed to strip all of that away. Here’s a tip: if your shampoo is described as ‘gentle’, you might just need a clarifying shampoo to detox your hair every 4-6 weeks. Signs you need to clarify: Your curls feel limp or weighed down Products sit on top of your hair instead of absorbing Your hair looks dull, even right after washing You're using the same products but getting different results Your scalp feels itchy or greasy faster than usual Our product recommendation: Use a clarifying shampoo like Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo, which removes buildup, hard water minerals, and pollutants without stripping your natural hair. Apply to wet hair, lather well, and leave on for up to 5 minutes before rinsing. Always follow with a conditioner or hair mask since clarifying can be drying. Your Protein-Moisture Balance is Off Your hair needs both protein and moisture to thrive. Too much moisture makes curls limp, stretchy, and unable to hold shape. Too much protein makes hair dry, brittle, and straw-like. So if your curly hair products are all protein or all moisture, you might be dealing with an imbalance. Here’s how to fix it in your curl routine - check the ingredients for every product you use. Look for products like hydrolysed wheat protein, keratin, amino acids, and moisture products like glycerin, aloe vera, or oils. Use protein treatments every 4-6 weeks and deep condition weekly with a hair mask. Balance is key for frizz-free curls. Your Water or Climate is the Problem Hard water minerals coat your hair and prevent products from penetrating. Humidity affects glycerin-based products, which is a favourite ingredient in most curly-based products. A product that works beautifully in one season can fail to work in another. Tip: to make your curls last longer and to prevent humidity from ruining your curls, use hairspray once your hair is fully dry. Final Thoughts Most of the time, a product stops working isn’t because your hair got used to it (which is definitely a thing - switch things up occasionally), it is because your is telling you it needs something else - to be clarified, more moisture or protein or applied differently. Before you blame the product and start shopping for replacements, pause and troubleshoot. Your natural hair isn’t being high maintenance - it’s just telling you what it needs.
